A gravel driveway may look simple from the surface, but the stone you see is only part of the system. A long-lasting gravel driveway depends on what happens underneath: proper grading, a stable subgrade, geotextile fabric when appropriate, the right base aggregate, proper drainage, and thorough compaction.

Why Gravel Driveway Preparation Matters

One of the most common mistakes with gravel driveways is assuming that adding more stone will solve every problem.

If the underlying driveway is soft, poorly drained or improperly graded, new gravel may temporarily improve its appearance without correcting the cause of the failure.

A properly constructed gravel driveway starts with the subgrade—the soil underneath the aggregate. Organic material and unsuitable material may need to be removed, soft areas addressed, and the surface graded before the aggregate base is installed.

The goal is to build the driveway from the ground up so vehicle loads are transferred through the aggregate instead of repeatedly deforming the soil underneath.

What Does Geotextile Fabric Do Under a Gravel Driveway?

Geotextile fabric is one of the most misunderstood parts of gravel driveway construction.

Its primary purpose isn't weed control.

Geotextile fabric creates separation between the native soil and the aggregate driveway base.

Without adequate separation, aggregate can gradually work downward into softer soil while fine soil particles migrate upward into the stone. Over time, the materials mix together and the effective thickness and strength of the gravel base can be reduced. Geotextile separators are specifically used in pavement systems to help prevent this intermixing.

For new gravel driveway and pad construction, we may install appropriate geotextile fabric over the prepared subgrade before placing aggregate.

This is particularly useful on the clay soils and softer ground commonly encountered around Greater Cincinnati.

Fabric isn't a substitute for proper excavation, drainage or adequate stone depth. It is one component of a complete gravel driveway system.

Building a Strong Foundation With Type C Base

For driveways that need substantial base construction, we can use Type C aggregate as the structural base layer.

Think of this as the foundation of the driveway.

Larger, angular crushed aggregate provides a strong layer capable of distributing vehicle loads over the prepared subgrade. Crushed stone is desirable for aggregate bases because its angular particles interlock rather than behaving like rounded gravel. Ohio construction standards similarly call for crushed aggregate bases placed over prepared subgrades and properly compacted.

The appropriate base thickness depends on the existing soil, drainage, intended traffic and condition of the site. A driveway expected to regularly support trucks and heavy equipment may require a different approach than a residential parking pad.

That's why we don't treat every gravel project as simply a predetermined number of inches of stone.

What Is Crusher Run and Why Is It Used?

Above the structural base, crusher run provides the dense, compactable driving surface most people associate with a finished gravel driveway.

Crusher run contains a mixture of angular crushed stone and smaller particles or "fines."

Those fines are important.

When crusher run is properly graded and compacted, the different particle sizes pack together and the angular stone interlocks, producing a much tighter and more stable surface than loose, uniformly sized stone. Dense-graded crushed aggregate is commonly used because of these load-bearing and interlocking characteristics.

A properly installed crusher-run surface provides:

  • A firm finished driving surface

  • Good compaction

  • Resistance to movement and rutting

  • Material that can be regraded during future maintenance

  • A smoother surface than larger base aggregate

It still remains a gravel driveway, so occasional maintenance should be expected. But starting with the right materials dramatically improves its performance.

Why Vibratory Compaction Matters

This is one of the most important steps in gravel driveway construction—and one of the easiest to overlook.

Driving over freshly spread gravel is not the same thing as properly compacting it.

Professional vibratory compaction applies repeated force to rearrange aggregate particles into a denser configuration. This helps the angular stone lock together and reduces voids within the aggregate.

Ohio aggregate-base specifications specifically address placing aggregate in controlled layers and mechanically compacting those layers; specifications also allow greater lift thickness when appropriate vibratory equipment is used.

Depending on the size and accessibility of the project, we use appropriate compaction equipment to consolidate the material rather than relying on vehicle traffic to eventually pack it down.

This is particularly important when constructing a new driveway in multiple layers. Each portion of the driveway needs to become part of a stable structure instead of leaving several inches of loose aggregate underneath an apparently finished surface.

Proper vibratory compaction helps reduce:

settlement, rutting, loose stone, washboarding and premature potholes.

In other words, buying good stone matters—but how that stone is installed matters just as much.

Drainage and Grading Are Just as Important as the Gravel

Water is one of the biggest enemies of any gravel driveway.

A perfectly compacted driveway can still develop problems if water is allowed to sit on the surface or saturate the underlying soil.

That's why we consider the existing terrain and where water needs to go before simply spreading aggregate.

Depending on the property, that may mean establishing or restoring a crown, creating appropriate cross-slope, correcting low areas, improving roadside drainage or addressing other conditions contributing to standing water and erosion.

The objective is simple:

Get water off the driveway and keep it from weakening the base underneath.

New Gravel Driveways vs. Gravel Driveway Repair

Not every gravel driveway needs to be completely rebuilt.

An existing driveway with a solid foundation may simply need to be reshaped, power raked or graded, crowned where appropriate, resurfaced with additional crusher run and recompacted.

Other driveways have deeper problems.

If gravel has disappeared into the soil, vehicles repeatedly sink into the same areas, severe ruts quickly return after grading or drainage has compromised the base, simply adding another thin layer of stone may not provide a lasting repair.

The same principles apply to gravel pads.

A good gravel pad isn't simply a pile of stone leveled on the grass. Proper excavation, grading, separation, aggregate selection and compaction create a stable foundation for the intended use.
